Putting The Amazing Back Into Grace
by Ken Legg
Someone once said that there are not many religions in the world - just two. One says, “Do”, the other says, “Done!” Today we
might say one says, “Pay” the others says, “Paid!” When Jesus died on the Cross, He cried, “It is finished!” All that God has ever
required of a human being was paid in full by Christ. He fulfilled the Law and paid the penalty for every commandment broken by
man. It’s done! And by believing in the finished work of Christ we are made perfectly righteous and qualified for every blessing.
That’s grace. That’s good news. That’s the gospel. And that’s what makes Christianity unique and stand apart from every other
religion. Every man-made religion demands that we do something in order for God to accept us or to bless us. Grace says we are
already accepted unconditionally and blessed immeasurably - all for free!
The Leaven of the Pharisees
What a tragedy it is when self-appointed and untaught preachers turn the glorious gospel of grace into another works trip. There is
a strange sound coming forth from the pulpits of our day. E.g.
“If you will…., then God will begin to…” (You fill in the gaps).
“If you will sow a seed into my ministry, then God will break the curse of poverty over your life” (Or, worse, “I will break the curse of
poverty over your life.” Whatever happened to the priesthood of all believers?)
“If you will send a gift of XXX to our ministry, then we will pray for the salvation of your loved ones.” (You mean you won’t do it if I
don’t send you some money??)
Paul’s definition of grace is unmistakable. In Romans 11:6 he says, “If by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no
longer grace.” Once we place a condition on grace, or ask a payment for it, or demand a work to obtain it then it ceases to be
grace. To those who try to relate to God though bargaining, Paul says, “You have fallen from grace.”
Jesus told us to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees. A Pharisee is someone who tries to get you to pay for that which God gives
you for free. That’s what legalism does.
Don’t allow anyone to take you out of the grace of God. Stand fast in the liberty Christ purchased for you. Salvation is free, and so
is every blessing that God has purposed for you and I. “He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how
shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?” (Rom.8:32).
Pure Christianity
Someone may ask, “If everything is for free, then why should I do anything for God or give anything to support His work on earth?”
The only reasonable answer to that is: because of love. Everything God has done for us flows from His heart of love. The only
response from us that God is interested in is that which is done through love. When we pray, give, serve, sacrifice, go, witness and
suffer out of a heart of love, this is pure Christianity. This is all that God has ever desired – a love relationship with us. Don't settle
for anything less!
