Church History
A small group of Christians met together in the Southwest High School on Easter Sunday, 1955, with a mind to form a congregation. On May 15, 1955, Southwest Christian Church was officially organized, with 35 members.  J. Paul Morgan served as minister on a part-time basis for several months. George Johnson also served in this capacity until Fall, 1956, when the congregation called Jim Dyer as its first full-time minister. By this time, the congregation was meeting in a small, white-frame house and had purchased some property on Lynhurst Drive. As the church continued to grow, additional property was purchased on Lynhurst Drive in East Point, and in August of 1958, the congregation began meeting in a newly constructed facility there. The sanctuary seated around 300 people.

Between 1958-1970, Southwest Christian Church experienced great growth. Highlights of this era included growing, energetic youth groups and a steadily increasing missions emphasis. In February, 1962, Southwest played an instrumental role in the founding of Christian City.

Due to continued growth, the congregation began looking for a new location. On January 24, 1971, services were first held at our present location on Washington Road. The facilities at that time consisted of a chapel, gymnasium, kitchen, classrooms, and nursery. Soon it became apparent that more space was needed. On September 28, 1974, our present sanctuary was dedicated. One of the great blessings of this era was an expanding ministerial staff. Matt Farmer began serving with us in 1972 and Robert Belloir joined us from 1978 until 2003. The 80's brought the addition of James White in 1983, and Thom Miller in 1989.

Since 1971, Southwest has ministered, from its present location, to the community and the world. We have become a regional church, with folks coming from all over the metropolitan Atlanta area. The church has continued to grow and serve others. In 1983, we founded Southwest Christian Hospice, a ministry to the terminally ill. We continue to support that ministry to this day. A variety of programs continue to grow and involve our people; Sunday School, children's ministries, youth ministries, family ministries, young adult ministries, music ministries, etc.

The 1990's brought some changes to us. In 1992, our congregation was saddened by the death of Matt Farmer. Matt's influence and legacy is sorely missed, but it lives on today in the countless lives he touched. 1993, Jim Dyer retired after 37 wonderful years as our Senior Minister. The effect of Jim's long and faithful leadership will always be here with us and we are blessed that he and his family are still serving here with us in many ways. After much prayer, the congregation called Jim Donovan to serve as our new Senior Minister in 1993. Jim's dynamic preaching and leadership continually calls us to a deeper commitment to Christ and His kingdom.

The 90's also began our "moving forward" years. A new education wing was constructed and our whole facility was updated and renovated. Most recently, our sanctuary was completely refurbished. During the 90's we became heavily involved in College Campus ministries.

In 1992, Alan Stith joined our ministerial staff. 1997 was a significant year. We planted our first church! In 1997 we sent out a core group of people from this congregation to establish Heritage Christian Church in Fayette County. Heritage recently moved into their new building and continues to grow.

Also in 1999, we began our internet web site www.christianchurch.net, and in 2000 began RealAudio transmission of the sermons over the internet. The sermons have proven to be a very popular and effective missions tool in spreading the Word of God.

In the year 2000, Craig Kingston joined our staff as Minister to Young Adults. Pat Harbin became Adult Choir director. With each new year comes new opportunities to expand God's Kingdom. Our missions emphasis continues as a vital part of our church life. We are constantly looking for better ways to reach out to a world that needs Christ.

In the Summer of 2003, Clay Hining joined our staff as Youth Minister. In 2004, Vangie Shaver became our minister to children.

We are grateful to God for the rich history of His blessings upon Southwest Christian Church and we eagerly anticipate what He has in store for our future.
